I learned that the hegemonic theory has influenced the media presence, and can be applied to many movies. In the notes we wrote in class I learned that the hegemonic theory is the political, economic, ideological or cultural power shown and exerted by a more dominant group over “smaller, weaker” groups, this can be seen as the 1% or cultural domination.
For my hegemonic theory project I used the 2019 film “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”. In the clip we used, the queen had ordered her soldiers to attack not only Maleficent, but any other magical creatures after she accused her of poisoning the king ( which was not true, but she needed an excuse to attack Maleficent). The queen viewed as Maleficent and the other fairies as evil, and she didn’t like how they were different than her. The queen and her kingdom are represented as the dominant group (socially, economically, politically) , while the fairies and other magical creatures can be seen as the lower class. The dominant group (queen and her kingdom) try to dominate or over take the lower class, with the lower class fighting back.
